Baobhan Sith

Vampires, werewolves and ghosts are always fun, but they aren’t the only creature of the night. When looking for creatures to populate horror stories I gathered a huge file filled with facts about the other otherworldly beings.

The Baobhan Sith (baa van shee) is a fairy creature (sith means fairy) from Scotland. She is sometimes confused  with the Irish Bean Sídhe (banshee) whose wails warn of impending death. The Baobhan Sith is a different creature entirely. She is a succubus who rises from the grave once a year to feed. She is usually found in forests where she preys on hunters or travelers who get lost in the woods. Instead of feet she has hooves which she hides in her clothes.

The Baobhan Sith often hunt in groups. They seduce their victims by appearing as beautiful women. By using their telepathic powers to translate, they speak to their victims in their native language. With their sultry exotic accents the Sith entice men to dance with them. When the men are exhausted the fairy demons attack with their sharp fingernails. They claw the men and drink their blood.

For men, the attack of a Baobhan Sith is fatal, but if a woman is attacked she is transformed into a fairy and must return to the grave at sun up.

The Baobhan Sith are powerful and men have great difficulty resisting their charms. But like other vampires they shy away from sunlight. Iron is also a weakness. According to legend the iron in the horseshoes protects against the Baobhan Sith.

So, if you’re lost in the woods and find yourself confronted by beautiful exotic women who want to dance, make sure to climb under your horse and stay there.
